Upwards of 75% of Americans suffer from periodontal disease – and most of them aren’t even aware.
Periodontal, or gum disease, is when plaque and bacteria build up in the mouth, causing damage to the gums. If not treated early enough, the damage can spread to underlying structures, ultimately affecting the integrity of your teeth and jawbone. Tooth loss may occur.
There are periodontal treatments for the varying severities of gum disease. If caught early on, with no damage to the supporting structures, a professional cleaning may be all you need. If the disease has progressed more, a deeper cleaning, called scaling and root planing, may be necessary to remove the plaque and tartar below the gum line. Lastly, if need be, periodontal surgery may be needed to remove plaque and tartar and restore the gum or bone.
