Upwards of 75% of Americans suffer from periodontal disease – and most of them aren’t even aware.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal, or gum disease, is when plaque and bacteria build up in the mouth, causing damage to the gums. If not treated early enough, the damage can spread to underlying structures, ultimately affecting the integrity of your teeth and jawbone. Tooth loss may occur.
How to Treat Periodontal Disease
We offer various gum disease treatments in our dental office in Uptown Charlotte. It is important to catch the disease early on. With no damage to the supporting structures, a professional cleaning may be all you need.
If the disease has progressed more, a deeper cleaning, called scaling and root planing, may be necessary to remove the plaque and tartar below the gum line. Lastly, if need be, periodontal surgery may be needed to remove plaque and tartar and restore the gum or bone.
